Academic Seminar – 16th October // Dr. Magnus Rabel – “Suddenly, a Light: Saul’s Vision and the Platonist Flash of Insight (Acts 9)”

Academic seminars focus on early-stage research on questions at the intersection of Christian faith and scholarly enquiry. They are intended to be exploratory, generative for both presenter and participants, and accessible across disciplines.
Seminars run from 2-3pm, On most Fridays during the weeks of the University of Oxford’s full term
You are warmly invited to join us beforehand for community worship at 12.30pm and lunch in the Manor house (1-2pm).

Abstract:

When Luke tells how Saul met the risen Jesus, he uses the words Platonists used for the sudden sight of the intelligible: the light comes ‘suddenly’ and ‘flashes around’ him. Plutarch and Apuleius describe knowledge of God as a flash of lightning in the soul, seen once and briefly. Luke moves the flash outside the soul. Saul’s eyes are open and see nothing, his companions see only part of what happens, and the one seen is the one who ‘let himself be seen’. This paper reads Acts 9 against Middle Platonist accounts of seeing God and asks what Luke gains by making the vision of God something that happens to the body.
